How To Reset iPhone or iPad
Returning an iOS device to factory settings will fix many problems, and is essential if you’re selling it. We explain how to wipe and reset an iPhone or iPad
How to Factory Reset iPhone or iPad
A factory reset enables you to wipe the contents of an iPhone or iPad – useful if it’s misbehaving or you’re selling it on. Here’s how to erase everything.
Whether you’re selling your iPhone or taking it for repair you should reset it to delete your accounts and remove your content. Obviously, make sure it’s backed up to iCloud or iTunes.
Factory reset an iPhone or iPad by going to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings. You will be prompted to enter your passcode and Apple ID before the process completes.
It can be surprisingly easy to find yourself locked out of your own iPhone. Stories abound of people recovering lost devices, buying used devices with unknown passcodes already implemented or simply not remembering passcodes.
One quick fix for those who have purchased a used iPhone is to reset the device to its default settings. This action can transform the previously used device to function as if its brand new.
To reset a device to default settings, turn the iPhone completely off. Next, open up iTunes on your computer and connect the USB cord to the computer but hold off on connecting the phone. Then press and hold the home button on your iPhone while simultaneously connecting the USB adapter to the phone. Continue holding this button until iTunes displays this message: “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.”
Click “Okay,” and release the home button. You will then be prompted to “Restore and Update,” and verify your agreement with the iPhone licensing. After the restore is completed, your device will likely reboot and work as if it were fresh from the factory
How to soft reset an iPhone or iPad
The soft reset is a simple restart or reboot. Which is useful for when some of the apps aren’t responding properly. It’s also necessary if your phone isn’t able to get important functions to work, such as shutting down the phone by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button.
How to hard reset an iPhone or iPad
The hard reset is a lot more drastic and totally erases all the information on your phone, restoring it back to its factory state. Typically, it is useful if you’re planning to sell your phone or you just want to give your phone a fresh start.
